When a fire breaks out or you spot a fire, call out loudly to let neighbors know it and dial 119 to call a fire engine.

If you call 119, you will be asked, "Is it for a fire or for an ambulance?"
Please tell them the following clearly:
- There is a fire
- What is burning. If there are any injured people. Describe the fire.
- Address of where the fire is
(If you don't know the address, describe the building or a landmark.)
- Name and phone number of the person calling
When you hear the siren of a fire engine, wave your hand and guide them to where the fire is.
What to do when initial fire breaks out (initial extinguishing)
If the fire is small, put it out yourself. This is called "initial extinguishing".

1 Pull out the safety pin

2 Remove the hose and point it at the burning area

3 Squeeze the lever strongly and spray over the burning area
If you don't have a fire extinguisher, pour water over the burning area, or cover the burning area with a wet cloth such as a sheet or a bath towel. (Never pour water on a pot of oil.)
If the fire reaches the height of the ceiling, give up trying to put it out by yourself and run away immediately.
What you can do to prevent a fire
The most common causes of a fire are cooking stoves, cigarettes, stove heaters, and electrical cords.
Please be aware the following to prevent a fire:
- Stay near the cooking stove when cooking.
Do not place flammable objects near the cooking stove.
- Do not smoke in bed.
When throwing away the cigarette butts, pour water over them to completely extinguish.
- Do not place flammable objects near the stove heater.
Turn off the stove heater when you go out or when you go to bed.
- Unplug electrical cords when not in use.
Clean the outlet to prevent dust from accumulating.
