Resident Registration
Foreigners who will stay more than 3 months must register as a resident of the town where they live.
This is called "Jumin Toroku (resident registration)".
You can receive various services such as health insurance and pension after registering as a resident.
Once you decide where to live in Japan after entering the country, you must complete the resident registration procedure within 14 days.
Go to the municipal office of where you will reside and submit a moving-in notification.

- Resident card (zairyu card), or passport for those who haven't received it yet
- Documents showing family relationships and its Japanese translations if you live with a non-Japanese family
After completing the procedures, your address in Japan will be written on the back of your resident card.
Resident Record
A resident record is created after registering you as a resident at the local municipal office.
A resident record contains information such as your name, address, family relationship, My Number (individual number), nationality/region, residency status, etc.
Once you have your resident record, you can receive a copy of your resident record.
A copy of the resident record is a certificate made from the contents of the resident registration.
You need it when you rent a house, find a job, or obtain a driver's license.

When you are asked, "Please bring your resident record" or "I need a copy of your resident record," you can obtain it from your local municipal office with your ID such as your resident card.
You will be charged a fee for a copy of your resident record.
If you have your My Number card, you can get a copy of your resident record at a convenience store.
