There are many services available to support children and those who are raising children.
[Child Allowance (児童手当)]
This allowance is given to those who are raising children up to the age of 18 (until the first March 31 after a child turns 18).

[Childcare Allowance (児童扶養手当)]
This allowance is given to those single parent/guardian who are raising the following children due to divorce, etc.:
- Children up to age 18 (until 31 March after turning 18)
- Children with disabilities up to age 20
The allowance amount per month is as the following:
① One child - 10,160 yen to 43,070 yen
② Two children - The amount of ①, plus 5,090 yen to 10,170 yen for the 2nd child
③ Three or more children - The total amounts of ① and ②, plus 3,050 yen to 6,100 yen per child from the 3rd child
The total allowance amount depends on the income of the individual who is raising the child.
Those who have an income more than the set amount are ineligible for this allowance.
An application for this allowance is processed at the local municipal office.
[Child Rearing Allowance (児童育成手当)]

This allowance is given to those single parent/guardian who are raising children up to age 18 (until March 31 after turning 18) due to divorce, etc.
The monthly allowance is 13,500 yen per child.
Those who have an income more than the set amount are ineligible for this allowance.
An application for this allowance is processed at the local municipal office.
Support for disabled

[IDs for the disabled]
A “disability” is a condition in which a part of the body or mind does not function properly.
Your local municipal office provides the following IDs for those who are disabled:
- Those with physical disabilities – a certificate for physically disabled (身体障害者手帳)
- Those with intellectual (the ability to understand and make decisions) disabilities - 愛の手帳 (Tokyo Special Education Certificate)
- Those with mental disorders: Mental Disability Insurance Welfare Certificate (精神障害者保険福祉手帳)
Those who have one of these IDs can receive services such as paying less medical cost, less tax and discounts for public transportations.

Support for disabled children
[Special Childcare Allowance (特別児童扶養手当)]
This allowance is given to those who are raising children with a disability until the child reaches the age of 20.
The monthly allowance amount is as the following:
- Children with particularly severe disabilities - 52,400 yen
- Children with severe disabilities - 34,900 yen
Those who have an income more than the set amount are ineligible for this allowance.
An application for this allowance is processed at the local municipal office.
[Child Rearing Allowance "児童育成手当" (Disability Allowance "障害手当")]
This allowance is given to those who are raising children with a disability until the child reaches the age of 20.
The monthly allowance is 15,500 yen per child.
Those who have an income more than the set amount are ineligible for this allowance.
An application for this allowance is processed at the local municipal office.
[Disabled Child Welfare Allowance (障害児福祉手当)]

Children with particularly severe disabilities receive this allowance until they reach the age of 20.
The monthly allowance is 14,850 yen per child.
Those who have an income more than the set amount are ineligible for this allowance.

[Welfare (生活保護)]

“Welfare” is a system to support those who are in financial trouble to live, such as being unable to work due to illness or an accident.
You can receive money for food, clothes, water bills, utility bills, rent, for your children to study at elementary and junior high schools, for paying medical bills, etc.
There are several conditions that must be met to receive the welfare.
