【Disaster Prevention Topics⑫】~What to do before heavy rain or a typhoon~
The Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation “TSUNAGARI” is introducing tools that are useful for disaster prevention, as part of our “Disaster Prevention Topics.”
We’ve reached the season when we get heavy rain and typhoons.
Make sure you do the following before the heavy rain and typhoons arrive.
① Check the weather and information
Check the weather forecast and the news multiple times to find out when heavy rain and typhoons are coming.
You can view the weather forecast and the news in several different languages on the following website.
Japan Meteorological Agency (jma.go.jp)
Multilingual Portal: Japan LIFE & BOSAI がいこくごの 生活と防災の情報 | NHK WORLD-JAPAN
② Check the hazard maps
Hazard maps are maps that show places that may be affected by a disaster, and places to escape to if a disaster occurs.
Look at the hazard maps for your area, and check whether your home or your current location is dangerous.
- Access hazard maps via the following page.

③ Talk with your loved ones
Look at hazard maps and other information with your family and loved ones, and confirm a place to which you can escape. You should also decide which roads you will take if you do escape, and how you will contact each other.
④ Prepare items
Electricity and water can sometimes stop during heavy rain or a typhoon.
Make sure you prepare portable lights, water, food, and other essentials.
Charge your smartphones ready for a blackout.
- See the page below for information about what to prepare.

⑤ Preparations outside the home
Bring items that are outside your home inside, so they don’t fly off with the rain and wind.
Clean your drainage (places where water passes through) so the rain can flow away.
- See the page below for information about other things to prepare.
