Finding a Place to Live

When you want to rent an apartment or a condo, you go to a real estate agency located in the town where you want to live. You may search online first and then visit a real estate agency.
First, decide which apartment you want to live in and submit a “Tenancy Application Form.” Then, you will undergo a screening process to verify your income, place of employment, and other details. When you’re deemed able to rent a room, you’ll be able to sign a lease. To sign the lease, you’ll need money for the rent and someone to act as your guarantor.
It takes at least one to two weeks from the time you apply for an apartment before you can actually move in.
Money Required to Rent a Room
- Rent … You’ll need to pay for the month you move in and the following month.
- Security deposit … Money paid to your landlord. This is used if the domicile needs repair when you move out.
The security deposit is about one month’s rent. As long as you don’t damage or dirty the room, you'll get the deposit back when you move out. - Gratuity fee … Money paid to the landlord as a gesture of thanks. The gratuity Fee is about one month’s rent.
- Brokerage fee … Money paid to a real estate agency.
- Fire insurance premiums … Money paid for insurance to cover events like fires.
A Guarantor
A guarantor is someone who will pay your rent on your behalf if you are unable to do so.
In some cases, you can use an insurance company instead of a personal guarantor. When you use an insurance company, you'll also need to pay them a fee.
