How to Open a Bank Account

When receiving money in Japan—such as a salary or student loan—you need an account with a Japanese bank.
You open a bank account either at a bank counter, online or at an ATM. You may need to make an appointment at some banks if you plan to visit a teller window. When opening an account, some banks have requirements regarding the length of your stay in Japan. Please check the home page of your chosen bank.
Required Documents *Requirements vary from bank to bank
~Essential Required Items~
- Residence Card (Zairyu Card)
~Items Required by Some Banks~
- Personal seal (Inkan)
- Japanese phone number
- Employee ID card or student ID card
- Identification documents such as My Number cards or driver's licenses
How to Open a Bank Account at a Bank Counter
- Visit a bank teller window during business hours, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Fill out the forms and submit the required documents. You may be asked to write your name, address, and date of birth in Japanese on forms.
- Also, you'll need your 4-digit ATM card PIN, so think of it ahead of time.
Once the procedure is complete, a bankbook will be issued. Your ATM card will be mailed to your address later.
Having a bank account is useful because you can use automatic withdrawals to pay for utilities such as electricity, gas, water, cell phone bills, and internet service.
