Stronger Yen/Weaker Yen

The Help Mark and the Maternity (Pregnancy) Mark

Stronger Yen "円高endaka" / Weaker Yen "円安enyasu"

Stronger Yen "円高endaka"

When the value of the yen strengthens against a foreign currency, it is called the "appreciation of the yen" (stronger yen).

Weaker yen "円安enyasu"

When the value of the yen weakens against foreign currency, it is called the "depreciation of the yen" (weaker yen).

For example, if 10,000 yen is exchanged into dollars, and $1 = 100 yen, then 10,000 yen ÷ 100 yen = $100.

However, if $1 = 125yen, 10,000 yen ÷ 125 yen = $80.
For example, for 10,000 yen, the dollars you can get in exchange will vary with the exchange rate.

At 100 yen to the dollar, the yen appreciates because you get more dollars.
At 125 yen to the dollar, the dollar is less, so the yen is "weaker".

When you travel to Japan from abroad, the "weaker yen" makes your trip less expensive. You can buy a lot of goods in Japan.
When you travel abroad from Japan, the "weaker yen" makes your trip expensive. When the yen is strong, you may buy a lot of goods overseas.
