Bike Sharing

Transportation in Tokyo

Getting around Tokyo is becoming more and more convenient. Bike sharing is spreading, allowing people to borrow a bike only when they need it, without having to own one. Tokyo Bike Sharing, for example, allows customers to rent and return bikes at all their ports in 12 wards of Tokyo (Chiyoda, Chuo, Minato, Shinjuku, Bunkyo, Koto, Shinagawa, Meguro, Ota, Shibuya, Nakano, and Suginami). Bikes can be rented from, and returned to, any Tokyo Bike Sharing port. They may be used for short periods or throughout the day, whichever suits your purpose. Bike sharing may also be available in other wards and cities than those mentioned above. Please check availability in those municipalities.

Five Safety Tips for Cyclists

Transportation in Tokyo

It is also important to observe traffic rules when riding a bike. There are five things you can do to ensure you ride your bike safely.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's "Five Safety Tips for Cyclists"

  1. Ride on roads, in general; not on sidewalks, unless permission is explicit.
  2. Keep to the left on roads. (Don't go against the flow of traffic.)
  3. Give way to pedestrians while on sidewalks, and ride slowly on the right edge.
  4. Follow the safety rules:
    • Don't ride: under the influence of alcohol, doubling on a bike, or side by side.
    • Turn on your bike light after dark.
    • Obey the traffic lights and don't forget to stop.
  5. Children must wear helmets.
