In June, it rains a lot in Japan. Weather forecasts use a variety of words related to rain, so knowing the words for rain will help you better understand the information.
梅雨、梅雨入り(Rainy Season, Onset of the Rainy Season)
In Japan, it rains a lot from the end of May to the beginning of July. Tsuyu is the name of the season in Japan when it rains a lot. Tsuyu-iri means that tsuyu is starting.
梅雨前線 (Seasonal Rain Front)
梅雨前線 uses the same kanji as 梅雨, but is read as "baiu zensen". During the tsuyu season, warm, moist air comes from the south of Japan, and cold, dry air from the north. The baiu-zensen is formed where these two air currents collide. This baiu-zensen being over Japan for a long time causes a rainy season with lots of rainfall.
降水確率(Probability of Rain)
降水確率 means the probability of rainfall. When the weather forecast announces a 20% kosui kakuritsu in Tokyo, the probability of rainfall of 1 mm or more, is 20%. When it is 0%, there will be no rain in Tokyo.
ゲリラ豪雨 (Unexpected Downpour)
ゲリラ豪雨 is when a lot of rain falls suddenly in one place in a short period of time. It occurs mostly in summer. During a guerrilla go-u, trains may be delayed and river water may flood the streets, so please be careful.
てるてる坊主
People make てるてる坊主 when they want the sun to shine. Teru teru bozu are small dolls made out of cloth or tissue paper, and hung on windows or balconies.
