Here are some words you might see when you check the schedule of shops, stores, and restaurants.
It is a problem when you go shopping or out to eat and find the store closed. It is convenient if you know in advance when stores are open and when they are closed. The words to check a store's schedule can be found on that store's website or displayed near the entrance.

Junbi-chu means that a store is getting ready to open its business for the day. The store has not opened yet. When the sign is junbi-chu, you need to wait until the store opens.

Eigyo-chu means that the store is open. You may enter the store.

 

Teikyu-bi is a closed day that the store decides on. When the store's teikyu-bi is set for Thursdays and Sundays, it is closed every Thursday and Sunday.

 

Kyu-gyo means the store is closed. Rinji kyu-gyo is being closed other than regular closed days. For example, if a store is regularly closed on Thursdays and Sundays, and closed on Wednesdays as well, the Wednesday is rinji kyu-gyo (temporary closing).

 

Nenjyu mukyu means that there are no closed days and that store is open all year round.
Stores are sometimes closed during the year-end and New Year holidays, as well as national holidays. It is recommended that you only visit a store after checking its website or other information.
