Words Used When You Take an Entrance Examination

February is the season of taking entrance exams. To take an examination is called juken受験juken.
A student who takes an entrance examination is called a juken-sei受験生juken-sei.

 

Entrance Examination – 入試nyu-shi

Nyu-shi is an examination to enter a school.
The entire process, from deciding to which school you want to apply, submitting an application, and finding out if you have been accepted, may also be called Nyu-shi. Taking nyu-shi (an entrance exam) is also called juken suru (taking an entrance exam.)

 

Standard Score – 偏差値hensachi

A school that you want to attend is called shibou-kou志望校shibou-kou. When you decide on a school, it is important to find out if the school of your choice is matched to your level of academic ability. When you want to find out if your academic ability is compatible with the school of your choice, you check hensachi (standard score). The standard score gives you information about your academic ability among all the students taking the exam. When your standard score is "50", your academic ability is about in the middle of the range. When you decide on a school to which you want to apply, it is a good idea to compare your score with that of the school you want to attend.

 

Gan-sho願書gan-sho

Gan-sho is an application to be submitted to the school of your choice for an entrance examination. Application documents 願書gan-sho may be obtained through the website, at information sessions, or at schools you wish to attend. When you get an application form, you may have to pay for it. Submitting an application form to a school of your choice is called shutsugan出願shutsugan. When submitting your application, you will need to transfer the examination fee to a bank, and will need to prepare other documents as well. The dates for submitting an application form are limited. After your application is submitted, you will receive a test voucher from the school. You bring your test voucher with you on the day of the examination.

 

Pass  – 合格goukaku /Fail – 不合格Fugoukaku

If you take an entrance examination for the school of your choice and pass, you may then attend that school. If you fail, you will not be able to attend that school.
