Motto Shiritai Nihongo

Words used when Vehicles are running late.

Delay[遅延chien]/ Suspension of Train Operation[運転unten見合わせmiawase]/ Alternative Route[迂回ukaiルートruto]/ Alternative Transportation[振替furikae輸送yuso

Trains, subways, and buses are often delayed or do not run on time when there is a natural disaster (typhoon, snow, heavy rain, earthquake), accident, or fire.

Delay[遅延chien

A delay is a situation in which a train is late by 5 to 10 minutes, or more. If you are late for school or work due to a delay, you may get a "delay certificate[遅延chien証明書shomeisho] (a piece of paper showing that your train was late)" at the station, or on the Internet, to be excused for being late.

Suspension of Train Operation[運転unten見合わせmiawase

Suspension means when a train stops due to a natural disaster or accident: the train's service is suspended until it can operate again. If the train is not able to operate, it will be 運休unkyu[train operation stopped].

Alternative Route[迂回ukaiルートruto

It is another way for passengers to get to their destination when trains are delayed or suspended. You may take another train or subway to your destination (a station you want to go to).

Alternative Transportation[振替furikae輸送yuso

If you have a train ticket or commuter pass (a ticket that can be used for a long period of time, such as one month or three months), you can get a "transfer ticket [振替furikae輸送票yuso-hyo]" at the station so that you do not have to pay for the alternative route.

Important notices such as delays may be found on train and subway companies' websites, on station platforms and bulletin boards, as well as on train announcements.
