【Disaster Prevention Topics㉔】Do you know what would happen to Tokyo if Mount Fuji erupted?
If Mount Fuji were to erupt—meaning fire, smoke, and rocks come out of the mountain—a large amount of volcanic ash* might fall on Tokyo as well.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has created the “Tokyo Mount Fuji Ashfall Special Website.”
Let's learn about what happens when volcanic ash falls and how we can prepare.
*Volcanic ash is fine powder that comes out when a volcano erupts. It falls from the sky.
①What happens when volcanic ash falls?
What happens to transportation (trains, buses, etc.)?
- If volcanic ash accumulates, trains and airplanes may be suspended. Buses and cars may also be unable to move.
- Volcanic ash can reduce visibility, increasing the risk of traffic accidents.
What happens to lifelines (electricity, water supply, etc.)?
- If volcanic ash sticks to power lines, rain may cause power outages.
- If volcanic ash sticks to antennas, internet access may be disrupted when it rains.
- If volcanic ash enters rivers and lakes, drinking water may become unavailable.
What other things might happen?
- Volcanic ash may cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, etc.
- Public transport may stop, making it difficult for people to return home.
- Roads may become impassable, preventing delivery trucks from bringing food and daily necessities.
②What kind of preparations should we make?
From eruption until volcanic ash falls
Gather information
→ When an eruption is possible or has occurred, the Japan Meteorological Agency will issue notifications about volcanic ashfall.
→ During disasters, false information may spread. Be sure to check accurate information from the Japan Meteorological Agency and ward/city offices.
While volcanic ash is falling
- Avoid going outside and stay indoors.
- Close windows and doors tightly to prevent volcanic ash from entering inside.
- If you must go outside, wear masks and goggles to protect your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Visibility may be poor due to ash. Avoid using cars.
Preparations in daily life
- Prepare goggles and masks in case of ashfall.
- Stock up on food, drinking water, and mobile batteries, etc.
- Decide in advance how to contact family and loved ones during emergencies.
