Support Higher Education Access for Refugee and Evacuee Youth Toshizo Watanabe International Scholarship
Pathways Japan has been operating the “Toshizo Watanabe International Scholarship” program since 2023 to support higher education for young refugees and evacuees.
This scholarship was established based on the strong will and generous donation of Mr. Toshizo Watanabe, who wished that young people with refugee backgrounds would gain opportunities for higher education, thrive in Japanese society, and ultimately become a driving force in transforming Japan into a country where diverse talents can flourish.
This is one of the few programs in Japan that provides scholarships (covering tuition and living expenses) for university and graduate school enrollment, primarily targeting young refugees and evacuees from countries such as Syria, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.
Eligible Applicants
Young people with refugee or evacuee backgrounds
※Young people residing under various such as study abroad, family stay, designated activities and long-term resident are eligible to apply.
Eligible Educational Institutions
any university in Japan, from junior colleges to doctoral programs.
Scholarship Benefits
・Tuition and Fees
・Subsidy for living expenses (monthly 50,000-70,000 yen)
